To better understand the value of a pilot test in residential connected security and the management of access control in private gated communities, we interviewed Richard Batistier, CEO of Iberaxess. Our local partner has over 20 years of experience working with Intratone, a leader in innovative GSM intercom and access control solutions.

Their recent pilot project in the high-end El Madroñal urbanization in Málaga showcased how a thorough pilot deployment helps optimize network performance and enhance user adoption for residents.

Richard, could you tell us about the initial steps of the pilot project at El Madroñal? How did the process start?

Richard Batistier: We began discussions early in the year, around February, and officially moved forward after the general assembly meeting in April or May. Although the process wasn’t rushed, we conducted extensive on-site testing to ensure the mobile network’s reliability — which is key for this solution. We verified that Wi-Fi works well and combined it with GSM to guarantee stable connectivity at all access points.

How did residents react to the new technology, especially the mobile app?

Richard Batistier: At first, it was a learning curve. We provided residents with detailed guides in multiple languages — Spanish, English, and French — to help them understand how to use the app and the intercom system. We know people often don’t read instructions right away, but once they start using the system, it becomes intuitive. For questions, we set up a dedicated support line, which helps us address concerns quickly.

Were there any challenges during the pilot? How were they managed?

Richard Batistier: As with any new technology, some challenges emerged, especially regarding network coverage and app notifications. However, these are exactly the kind of issues a pilot helps uncover. It gave us the chance to adjust configurations and provide better guidance to residents. We also considered adding clear signage next to entry panels, which is a common local practice, to simplify use.

How did the pilot impact the decision to move forward with full deployment?

Richard Batistier: The pilot was essential for building trust. After three months, the community was confident in the system’s reliability and ease of use. They appreciated the cost-efficiency and the flexibility — like remote access management and temporary codes. The feedback we gathered ensured the solution was well-tailored to their needs before expanding to all entrances.

What advice would you give to other residential communities considering a pilot test?

Richard Batistier: I’d say a pilot is invaluable. It allows you to experience the solution firsthand, involve residents early, and tailor the system to your specific environment. It also helps manage expectations and smooth out any issues before committing to a full rollout. Plus, partnering with a local expert ensures ongoing support and quick responses.

Thank you for your insights. Any final thoughts on Intratone’s solution?

Richard Batistier: Intratone combines innovation, reliability, and cost-effectiveness, making it a great fit for demanding environments like El Madroñal. The pilot confirmed that, and we’re excited to move forward with a full deployment.
