The era of 2G, also known as GSM, is coming to an end. This technology was developed in the 1980s and rolled out worldwide in the 1990s. While it was once innovative, 2G is now outdated and offers limited security and energy efficiency. European network providers will completely shut down the 2G network by the end of 2027.

In this blog, you will read everything you need to know about the end of 2G and Intratone.

Stay Connected in the Future – The End of 2G

Why the End of 2G?
The use of 2G requires significantly more energy than modern technologies such as 4G and 5G. Ending 2G is therefore not only a technological choice but also an environmentally conscious one. The new 4G and 5G networks consume less energy while offering greatly improved performance, functionality, and security. This step marks important progress for providers, users, and manufacturers such as Intratone.

Who Will Be Affected by the End of 2G?
The shutdown of the 2G network will impact many sectors. Industries such as alarm and security systems, the automotive industry, and elevator installations are still making use of 2G technology. In healthcare, for example with fall detectors, 2G still plays a role. Intratone and its users are also affected. Fortunately, Intratone already made the transition to 4G technology for its intercom systems in 2015. Since March 2021, Intratone has no longer produced modules dependent on 2G technology. Therefore, all modules manufactured after March 2021 are not affected by this issue.

What Does This Mean for Your Intratone Equipment?
All current Intratone products are already compatible with 4G and 5G. Intratone uses the mobile network only for installation and updates. Devices that are already installed will continue to function normally, whether they operate with badges, remote controls, or keypad codes. However, in order to guarantee ongoing product updates and support, a transition to 4G is necessary for devices still dependent on 2G.

Step-by-Step Transition to 4G
Through the management site, Intratone provides users with an overview of all 2G devices that need to be replaced. Note: only administrators can view this, so be sure to contact your administrator. With a convenient export function, administrators can directly send the references of the replacement products to your installer, ensuring a smooth replacement of the new module.

What Do You Need to Do?

  1. Check Your Equipment
Go to the management site and click on the “module to be replaced” tab to see which 2G modules are still in use. You will receive a list of the old equipment that needs to be replaced.
  2. Plan the Installation
Arrange with your installer to remove the old module and install the new one. TIP: schedule this during your already planned annual service/maintenance check. There’s also good news: the wiring does not need to be replaced, and other equipment, such as central units or fob readers, can continue to be used.
  3. Transfer Module Data
Thanks to the replacement process via the management site, all previous programming remains intact. No extra configuration is required after installing the new modules. You simply transfer the existing data to the new module. If needed, ask your installer for help or consult the user guide.
  4. Replace the Module
Have a certified installer replace the old module with a new one. You will then be ready to face the future without 2G.

On our 2G information page, you can find and download the step-by-step plan.

Stay Connected in the Future
Although Intratone as a manufacturer does not provide a physical replacement service, we are happy to provide you with all the necessary information. Still have questions? Our team is ready to support you with the transition to 4G and to make your installation future-proof.

By following these steps, you ensure that your Intratone system stays connected – now and in the future!
